In both dogs and cats there are multiple different types of vaccines which come under two broad categories:

- “Core” vaccines which are considered essential for all pets in Australia according to the World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA)

- “Non-core” which are recommended based on an animal’s degree of risk of exposure to the particular disease.

Dog Core Vaccines:

Canine Parvo Virus

Canine Distemper Virus

Canine adenovirus type-1 (infectious canine hepatitis)

Dog Non-Core Vaccines:

Bordetella bronchiseptica (infectious kennel cough)

Canine parainfluenza virus (infectious kennel cough)

Leptospirosis

Canine coronavirus

At Gold city Vets we recommend all dogs receive a C5 vaccine which covers the 3 core viruses as well as the 2 components for infectious canine cough (Bordetella and Parainfluenza). Your vet will discuss on an individual pet basis if they think your dog requires the Lepto or corona vaccine.

Cat Core vaccines:

Feline rhinotracheitis virus (cat flu)

Feline calicivirus (cat flu)

Panleucopenia virus (infectious enteritis)

Cat Non-core vaccines:

Feline immunodeficiency virus (feline aids)

Feline leukaemia virus

Feline Chlamydia virus

At Gold City Vets we recommend ALL cats receive an annual F3 vaccine which covers the 3 core viruses. Your vet will discuss if your cat requires any of the non-core vaccines during consultation.
